PCHS is filled with singers, guitarists, dancers, and other talented students, but sometimes we do not know who has the talent. Dragon Spotlight is one event where we learn the talents of our fellow classmates.
Dragon Spotlight is an event put togeher every year by Pekin’s student council. According to the Dragon Spotlight advisor, Mrs. Angel Carrington, “The Dragon Spotlight has been around longer than I can recall. It used to be a show filled with just lipsyncing; luckil,y it grew into different talents year after year.” Dragon Spotlight did branch out into a diverse set of talents, where people in the past have made movies, painted, sang their own songs, played instruments, performed comedy sketches, performed vantriloquisism, and many more.
There is more behind putting together the Dragon Spotlight than just having auditions. Carrington confessed, “There is much to be done for Dragon Spotlight. We have to come up with a theme, have auditions, leads, judges, decorations to put in the theatre, donations to sponsor the event, tickets to be made, rehearsals, t-shirts, Best Seat in the House and a lot more.” Student council chair of the event, Emily Lowman said, “ We put countless hours into getting ready for the Dragon Spotlight. A lot has to be done.”
Dragon Spotlight is on Thursday, Feb. 23 in the school’s theatre at 7 PM. Tickets are being sold for $6.00 at the BFO. Dragon Spotlight’s theme this year is superheroes. Some of the judges this year are: Joe Bland, a former Dragon Spotlight winner, Mrs. Theresa Black, an English teacher, Adam Penn, a musician, Chris Tarpley, a singer and muscian, Liz Curton, a dance teacher, and that is just to name a few.
One unique addition to Dragon Spotlight is The Best Seat in the House. The Best Seat in the House is a raffle where a student can win a spot on a nice sofa in the front row with free popcorn and drinks at the event. Lowman states, “Students pay for a raffle ticket and then closer to the show, we will pick a few tickets. The winners get to enjoy the show from the front row while sitting on a sofa with free drinks, candy, and soda.”
While most are excited to watch Dragon Spotlight, others are excited to be performing in the show. Junior Jessie Long will be one talent showcased. She will be singing her song, “Extended Vacation,” which she wrote herself. “I wanted to try out because my friends told me I would regret it if I didn’t at least try out, so I got brave and decided to try out,” Long admitted. She also says,“People should expect a unique sound and orginal lyrics when they hear my song at Dragon Spotlight.”
While Long is one oringal talent act in the Spotlight, much more is to follow. “This year’s Spotlight is filled with singers and instrumentalists,” Carrington said. “We also have a few dancers, too.” Dragon Spotlight will uncover the talent of PCHS students.
