PCHS offers many classes, including English, science, math, history, and CTE. CTE classes are based on many different career fields and life skills, such as Foods and Nutrition classes. Many students may not be interested in the cooking field as a life job, but it is nice for life skills. If you plan on having a family one day, can learn the ability to cook for them by taking this course. The foods and nutrition classes are one of many CTE classes that PCHS offers to its students.

We currently have around 54 CTE classes and have about 700 to 800 students currently enrolled in these classes this year. CTE Department Chairman Steve Huey said, “Years ago, this building was built and wasn’t attached to the rest of the campus or to the original building. It was built as an area vocational center, and that meant that students were coming or bused in from many schools here in Tazewell County, and loaded buses would be seen everyday with  students flowing out.”

PCHS currently offers all the CTE classes because they helps you prepare for the outside world. These classes allow you get a little preview of each career before you actually commit to one. It is very beneficial because you actually can see which career field is best for you before attending the college or post high school training.

Junior Marcus Palacios said that it has been very helpful for him. Palacios has gotten a taste of electronics in the class taught by Mr. Steve Clemons, and he is now currently deciding if that’s what he wants to do for the rest of his life. I personally have also taken the electricity class, and it gave me an insight into what it takes to be an electrician in the world outside of school.

Those aren’t the only classes like this that PCHS offers, though. There are numerous classes, such as health occupations, graphic design, creative fashions, childcare, automotive technology, manufacturing, media design, and much more.

Another way these classes are helpful is that businesses actually may choose the students who take the CTE classes over a student who doesn’t have the background information of that CTE class. Some businesses have actually helped arrange for new classes to be added for the projected job openings. This lets some selected students go straight from high school into a good-paying job.

These CTE classes help you get the foundation and the basics for a job and also help you prepare for a job environment when you’re out of the school environment. Every student has the chance to take  CTE classes and learn new skills for the long journey called life.
