Core Curriculum Enrichment (CCE)was a new addition to Pekin Community High School’s education system in January of 2009. According to Mrs. Kristin Walraven, she helped to create this program with Mrs. Melissa Bloom and Mrs. Danielle Owens. This program was added to give support for students who scored close to meeting the requirements on their sophomore PLAN test. Mrs. Amy Hubner and Mr. Seth Mingus agreed that CCE is a great program and that this will help enhance students’ learning skills and give them more information.
Reading and math are the two subjects taught in CCE. There are currently 226 students enrolled in this program. Many students in the program get candy and motivational comments from their teachers upon entering the classroom. Then, the teacher follows up with usually a short lesson or example problem for the day. These practice problems are the key to obtaining the extra knowledge students need to be prepared to take the ACT test in the spring.
The teachers who participate in this program meet once a week to prepare and make better contributions to their class. After asking a current student who participates in Pekin High’s CCE if his grade(s) have improved since the beginning of the semester, Kody Krone said, “Yes, my math grade went from a 73 to a 78 percent”. His additional comments were that the teachers do a great job of motivating students and keeping their attention long enough to get the job done. Teachers and staff members have seen the success and have actually had students come back to them and tell them how much CCE helped them prepare for the ACT test.
Overall, the program seems to be working, and the test results show it.
