On Friday, Oct. 14, the girls varsity tennis team traveled to Bloomington to compete in sectionals. In total, there were ten teams competing to get to state. These teams included Morton, Pekin, Normal Community, Normal Community West, Bloomington High, U-High, Central Catholic, Gibson City, Lincoln, and Pontiac.
Going into a competition like this one can be very intimidating. Junior Mimi Latronico, number one singles player, says that she listens to music to calm her nerves and to get pumped up. As for Junior Alyssa Cleaver, who plays number two doubles, she stated, “I try not to think about it.” She tries to stay positive and aggressive. Sophomore Hannah Conlin, number one doubles player, says the best attitude to have is a positive one. Her mindset is the thought of “I am going to win.”
The girls battled through the cold and wind, but only one Pekin player was able to make it to state, and that was Latronico. Latronico’s first was against an opponent from Gibson City, and she won both sets 6-1, 6-0. Her second match was against Normal Community, and she won with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Latronico then competed again on Saturday, when she placed second. She defeated her opponent from Bloomington High School with the score of 6-1, 6-0. In finals, Latronico lost her match against Normal West with the score being 6-0, 6-3. She will be heading to Chicago to compete at state on Oct. 20-22. Latronico said, “State will be tough but very interesting.”
As for the rest of the team, their season has come to an end. They worked very hard and put in a lot of dedication, but it’s time to hang up their uniforms. Good job to the girls’ varsity tennis team this year and the team wishes Mimi Latronico good luck as she makes her way to state this week.
