ThePekin dance team has placed well in two competitions this year so far and are headed to state.
On Jan. 14, the team competed at the BureauValleyHigh Schoolat that Illinois Dance Team Association (IDTA) Regionals. The team qualified for state in both dances, which were in the AAA jazz and the AAA contemporary/lyrical/modern categories. Overall, the team scored in the high 80s, and senior and captian Abbey Steger was selected as a rising star.
Sue Venturi Johnson has been coaching the girls for around 15 years. Mrs. Johnson stated that her most memorable time was qualifying for state in both dances with a really good score. She prepares the members of the team for state with four practices per week and encourages them to always do their best.
Team members include: Abby Brennemann, Maddie Bricka, Jaclyn Cakora, Jill Crabtree, Montana Jones, Makenzie Lucas, Reika McNish, Marissa Oesch, Cassidy Savage, Stefanie Schrieber, Abbey Steger, and Taylor Walden.
The choreography for the team is left up to the girls. Captains Abbey Steger and Montana Jones choreographed the jazz dance, and Reika McNish choreographed the contemporary dance for the competition.
On Jan. 28, the team competed at another IDTA Regional competition at Clinton High School where they also did well. Even though the team has already qualified for state, the competition is good practice for other upcoming events, such as another regional competition at Dunlap High School on Feb. 11 and later, the state competition.
The dance team has competed at the state level three times before, and Mrs. Johnson has confidence that the team will do well again this year and hopefully come out with a state win.
