On Saturday, Jan. 21, the PCHS cheerleading squad traveled to the Peoria Civic Center for their first school competition. The ladies brought home first place and were the overall grand champions of the competition. The squad beat out schools, such as Peoria Notre Dame, Western High School, and Bettendorf High School.
Coach Susan Howard said, “We [practiced] two to three times a week for a few hours in order to prepare for this competition.” The cheerleading squad started practicing for this competition last August.
Coach Howard also said, “There was a junior high and a high school division. This was the first competition the girls competed in as a group.”
Junior Tianna Lutz, who has been a cheerleader for ten years, said, “This [was] our first competition as a group, [I was] very excited to represent my school.”
The cheerleading routines are judged based on the execution of the following: tumbling, jumps, partner stunts, and basket tosses. The routines are also judged in the technique used in the following: dance motions, transitions, formations, and the use of the floor. Also, precision and timing, along with synchronization, are looked at for each squad.
In addition, the creativity in choreography is judged, along with crowd appeal, projection, and voice. These are big factors in every competition. However, the most important factor is perfection of the routine and overall impression. Each routine lasts between three and four minutes.
Senior Summer Connet, PCHS cheerleader, said, “I was really nervous; there were a lot of very good schools there. I was so happy we won; I was surprised we pulled it off.”
The girls are practicing hard for the upcoming competition scheduled in February.
