Spring sports are coming up fast. IHSA rules state that all high school spring sports cannot start practice until Feb. 27. The only sport that can start practicing early per IHSA rules has already hit the ground running, and that is boy’s and girl’s track, which started practices and pre-season lifting on Jan. 16. Pekin is preparing for all spring sports now with some pre-season training, and as soon as practices start, the sports are going to be out there practicing harder than ever.

One of the spring sports is boy’s tennis; their first meet is on March 27 at Limestone Community High School. Coach Toel is their head coach this year, and he has Coach Stoner as his assistant coach. Coach Toel said, “We have a week of tennis boot camp prior to our first match; this may be the most difficult conditioning program of any other Pekin High School sport.” He also stated, “I’m excited to be back this year after playing in high school; it’s just fun to be back and watch other kids go out and play”. The team is in need of as many new freshman and sophomores as they can get this year, so they can carry on the tradition of Pekin’s great tennis history.

Another spring sport is boy’s baseball, and their first match is on March 16 in the Galesburg Tournament. Mr. Larry Davis is the baseball coach, and he said, “I’m excited for every year, and I’m going to make them work hard and make sure they do things the right way.”

Other than boy’s baseball, there is also girl’s softball with Gigi Macintosh as their head coach. The girl’s first game is on March 17 at Richwoods High School. Coach Macintosh said, “The girls have been working hard on their off-season hitting, pitching and running; hopefully, the hard work pays off for the girls this year”.

Girl’s soccer has a new coach this year, Coach Edgar Sandoval. The girls have been doing pre-season training. Only one of the previous varsity soccer players is returning this year, and that is Summer Connet. She said, “The team is looking really good, and they have been training, running and playing soccer at the Dome”. She also stated that there are more than fifteen junior returning to the team this year.

Girl’s and boy’s track also has already started training. Their first meet for the boys is the March 17 Charleston Indoor Invitational. The girl’s first meet is March 24 with the Normal U-High Cogdal Relays. The boy’s head coach is Mr. Marshall Tucker, and the girl’s head coach is Mrs. Christina Isaacs, who is a new head coach this year. Coach Doug Nutter is another coach for the boy’s track team, and he stated, “ I’m ready to get the season rolling” and implied that he is excited to see how the team will do this year “after being conference champions and getting second in conference last year.”

Overall, it looks to be an exciting spring season.
