There are so many genres of music around the world these days that it is so hard to fit a particular artist or song in just one category. The band Foster the People falls into the Indie Pop genre, and by the sounds of their music, they really do fulfill that position. The music group consists of only three members named Mark Foster, Mark Pontius, and Cubbie Fink and has been nominated for best new artist. The band started in Los Angeles, Cal. when the three musicians decided to start a band. They were inspired by the Beach Boys, because Mark Foster really liked how their music sounded, and he also liked their style.
The original name of the band was Foster and the People, but everyone who had heard the band’s name thought it was called Foster the People, so the name just stuck. Their overall views on most things are usually positive, but really they just enjoy stating facts in a lot of their music. They really want their music to have a lot of meaning to them and the people who listen to it. Their music tends to be straight forward and for the people, which is how they got part of their name. The song that they are best known for is “Pumped Up Kicks”, and the website http://blogs.citypages.com said, “The song is about a teenage kid who feels trapped, isolated, and basically hates his life…” This song has been played on many different radio stations because of its tone, and it really appeals to the general public. Before they got their music onto the radio, the group had to start somewhere, though.
The band got their lucky hit on a website called The Hype Machine (http://hyperm.com/). The website is an Mp3 blog site that exposes artists who are not exactly well- known yet or who are just looking for somewhere to put their music for others to listen to. Not only does this website have “underground” artists, but it also has some popular ones, so people can rate and comment on their music. The creator of this website is Anthony Volodkin, and the reason he made it was because he was frustrated with today’s radio stations and other music blog websites.
After the group got noticed and signed to a record deal, they produced their only album Torches. Once they actually got noticed, everything just took off. They had an appearance on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 8, and they also had one of their songs put into the movie Friends With Benefits. In a lot of people’s opinions, the song “Pumped Up Kicks” is one of their best. Senior Seth Stone said, “This song is poppin’!” Also, the song got nominated for the best rock music video. It was number one on the alternative song chart, and it placed number three on Billboard’s Hot 100.
